Advocates want renter protection as part of bill

As the financial services industry awaits final language in the federal reform bill, housing advocates are wondering if tenant protections will be extended by the legislation.
The Protecting Tenants at Foreclosure Act of 2009, mandates that renters be given 90 days notice before they must leave a property, and in many cases, provides that they may remain for the entire term of the lease.
PTFA is set to expire at the end of 2012, but language in the Wall Street reform legislation would keep it alive through the close of 2014.
The National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty released a report this month showing that tenants continue to be forced out on short notice and threatened with eviction by the new property owner in a foreclosure sale.
The center was a leading advocate for PTFA and according to its research, legislatures in 21 states this year considered bills that would strengthen protections for renters.
In November 2008, a law went into effect in Connecticut that freezes or prohibits eviction proceedings at foreclosed properties until 60 days after a buyer’s new title takes effect or the expiration of the lease, whichever is later.
A “cash for keys” law went into effect the same month in the state, which allows the new owner to offer financial incentives to tenants for moving out quickly, with stipulations on the value of the offer. The General Assembly this year did not pass a bill that would have set a $2,000 minimum for move-out incentives and would have codified as state law certain sections of PTFA.
Under Connecticut law, the report said, Section 8 leases may survive foreclosure and a court may order eviction as part of a foreclosure proceeding only if the tenants are party to the action.
“Renters are losing their homes through no fault of their own. … Laws like the (PTFA), when properly implemented and enforced, are essential to preventing renters from becoming homeless,” said Maria Foscarinis, executive director of the center

We can blame the fast food industry

We can blame the fast food industry for frying everything and we can blame the beverage companies for their addictive colas.
While all of these made their contributions to our current plight, one source of our caloric distress runs through everything: portion size.
We eat hamburgers – not the gigantic, multi-patty ones, just a standard burger – that are 3 times as big as those of 30 years ago. Our orders of french fries are at least twice the size of their cousins in the 1970s. Pizza no longer has cheese only on the top but its crust is also filled. Large soft drinks are the size of watering cans instead of baby bottles.

Shines in low light sony neX-5 pounds 549 (with 16mm lens) from www.jessops.co.uk ….
Despite being the same size as an average compact camera, Sony’s NEX-5 boasts a clever sensor that rivals the low-noise performance of a DSLR and can also use interchangeable lenses.
Able to shoot 14.1 megapixel stills and 1080i HD video, it’s excellent in low-light conditions. A planned firmware upgrade later in the year will allow 3D panoramic pictures.
Navigating the menus can prove a little troublesome and experienced photographers may find the image options a little limited. Nevertheless, those looking for a considerable jump in quality from a compact camera will find a lot to love with the NEX- 5

Costing us dear

THE residents of Glenholt are already counting the costs of having a Tory/Lib Dem Government and a Tory council.
I estimate that to enjoy all the amenities that we pay for in council tax, we shall need Pounds 500 a year for taxi fares: unless, of course, the city council sees fit to restore the subsidies to our five-day-a-week taxi bus, which is to be axed on August 6 as part of the cost cutting. This service is a lifeline to the elderly and disabled of Glenholt, who will not be able to shop, get to the library or to the doctor’s surgery, unless they are prepared to hire a taxi. Will Cllr Vivien Pengelly perhaps take Pounds 500 off our rates? JEAN NOSWORTHY Plymouth
We tease one another about

We tease one another about how keen our sixth sense is at certain times. I find it very romantic. I call it a connection to something more and greater than the physical senses are able to distinguish.
And how about the other five senses? How do we know just which senses we should focus on? If they work to create the kind of romance your partner appreciates, then I believe you have what it takes to increase the power of your sixth sense, far beyond touch, taste, sight, smell and sound. Here are some tips for using all six senses to be more romantic (excerpted from the book Romance on a Budget ? www.romanceonabudget.net):
Sight
Look into my Eyes (#11) ? When you gaze into each others eyes, everyone else seems to disappear. And looking intensely at one another can send a message to your partner that can lead to better things.
Sound
Listen ? (#37) ? Do you want to know a secret? Being a good listener is an art. Some people are natural good listeners, others need practice.
